To the best of my knowledge, this has to do with residency (and maybe citizenship?--I've never worked outside the country); I live in the US and am a US citizen, so I pay only US taxes on my Gengo income. I'm not sure how this changes if you're based anywhere else.

Gengo translators are independent contractors for Gengo, Inc. in the U.S. If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, it doesn't matter where you live while providing services for Gengo, Inc. However, you must complete a W9 form.
If you are a non US-citizen living in your home country of elsewhere, you need to fill out a W8-BEN form.

You can request a form here: http://gengo.com/account/file_tax_form/
Thanks to you both, that cleared it up for me!
