RumpelstiltskinRSS is a web based RSS reader for your Gengo Jobs RSS. After some one-time steps, you can use any browser on any device to alert you for new jobs. As a bonus, RumpelstiltskinRSS does some filtering for you so you will only be alerted if the size and level of the job meet your preferences, taking the time of day into account.

I optimized RumpelstiltskinRSS for my own needs, but tried to make it so that it can be used by all translators. You can find RumpelstiltskinRSS at http://rumpelstiltskin.appje.nl/rss/. For a description how to use it, follow the Introduction link.

Note that you can set the refresh interval to either 31 or 62 seconds. Use 31 for optimal chances to grab a job, without breaching Gengo's demand to access your Jobs RSS at most twice per minute. Or use 62 to test if RumpelstiltskinRSS suits you, while still running your current RSS reader (set to check at most once per minute) on another device.

    Please note that switching the email notification mike on is not enough. You have to ask me to manually wire it to your email address or it won't work. I took your post as a request to do so, and added your address + account to the list. If you check "Insert dummy job ... (to trigger demo alert)", you should start receiving email notifications.

    If you did the April/May survey and promised to make a recurrent donation via PayPal, now you can. Just visit the Donate page at http://rmpl-2020-1.nl, and follow the steps under the header "PayPal" to start a subscription.

    If you want to make a recurrent donation using a credit card, I plan to add support for it on rmpl.nl in the course of December. (And yes, in the end I plan to offer all options on every mirror site, but due to some under the hood issues that's a bridge too far right now.)

    So far, I allowed anyone who did the survey and promised to make a donation to use the paid server, even if they had not actually donated yet. As of January 1, 2021, the paid server will be strictly for paying users (those who made a donation or bought the iOS or Android app) only.

    If you saw a blank page in the app today, you are not the only one. This morning, at 10 AM Europe time, I updated the server scripts and apparently introduced some bug. I restored the previous version around 4 PM, and it looks like this solved the issue.

    Like I promised two weeks ago, I added support for recurrent donations using your credit card. Due to under the hood details, this is only possible on the Donate page at rmpl.nl.

    Again, you can also start a subscription via PayPal, but this option is only available on the Donate page at rmpl-2020-1.nl.

    Reminder: paying users can receive email notifications about available jobs. For security reasons, I store your email address separate from your preferences, so just checking this option is not enough. Please contact me if you wish to start receiving email notifications.

    The rmpl-2020 domains were a temporary solution for problems that started about a year ago. The time has come to replace them.

    On the server that hosts rmpl-2020-1.nl, I hired a new domain rmpl-free.nl, which points to the same files. In theory, you can simply change the URL in your browser from rmpl-2020-1.nl into rmpl-free.nl and won't see any difference. In practice, I may have overlooked some detail, so don't hesitate to contact me if you experience a problem.

    If you are using rmpl-2020-2.nl, I will discontinue this mirror since it never performed well, and advise you move to rmpl-free.nl. Again, please contact me if you experience any problem.

    As for rmpl-2020-3.nl/paid, I plan to replace it by rmpl-paid.nl, which is hosted by the same provider as rmpl-2020-3.nl, but I am still working on the details. If you visit rmpl-paid.nl right now, you will not be able to log in yet.

    In summary, if you are using rmpl-2020-1.nl or rmpl-2020-2.nl, please move to rmpl-free.nl and contact me if you experience a problem; if you are using rmpl-2020-3.nl/paid, keep using it until I ask you to move to rmpl-paid.nl.

    Some users of the browser version have contacted me recently because they got an error message about a problem setting up a secure connection.

    If you have the same experience, a simple workaround is to visit http://www.rmpl-free.nl directly. Make sure to use http://... as opposed to https://.... (ending in -s) so your browser does not try to set up a secure connection.

    As a rule of thumb, it's always a good idea to use a secure connection (https//...), but since RumpelstiltskinRSS does not exchange privacy sensitive data with your computer, it's okay to use an insecure connection in this particular case. (And since this is about the free version, I am not going to solve this issue by replacing the apparently invalid certificate by a paid valid one.)

    As an aside, please note rmpl-free.nl uses its own preferences. There is no synchronization with your preferences on rmpl.nl.

    Hi Alex,

    Is it normal that the sound for the RSS only plays if I have it as the page that is on top? If I'm working in a different tab or on Chrome, I am missing alerts constantly. It just started happening about a week ago. Any ideas? Hope everything is going well!

    Hi Cheryl,

    My first guess is your browser updated itself recently and the new version has "improved" the way it handles sounds: if the page is not on top, the user is apparently not interested in its contents so playing the sound would only be a distraction. :-)

    If my guess is correct, I suggest you check if there's also an improvement in the preferences where you can tell the browser you do want to hear the sound even if the page is not on top.

    The most reliable way to get alerts is by using the Android or iOS app. You can still run the browser version, and when your device produces a sound, try to grab the job on your desktop.

    (Actually, both apps could use an update for better compatibility with the latest OS versions. @Anyone who experiences an issue with the app, please contact me about it. Alas, I haven't found much time recently to work on the apps, but once I do it's helpful if I know what to work on. Top on my list is an issue in the iOS version that causes the screen to be blanc though the sound works fine.)

    About a year has passed since I made RumpelstiltskinRSS donationware. So how was this year, financially speaking?

    Well, the donations were in balance with the expences (thank you!), but most of them were one-time donations. While some people started a subscription (thank you even more!), it's not a solid enough financial base for the next 12 months.

    To give you an idea, I spend some USD 600 per year on the servers, test devices for the app versions, Apple developer membership for the iOS version, and a business bank account as required by my payment service provider, and the current subscriptions add up to less than half of that. And while I also get some money from the app sales, there's no guarantee how much that will be from month to month.

    So if my tool helps you earn money, I invite you to make a new one-time donation, or start a subscription. If enough people do so, I can keep running the current cheap, crowded but acceptably performing server for the non-paying users and the less crowded, more reliable (and more expensive) server for the paying users.

    As an alternative, I'm thinking of changing the rules so that after a free trial period, a subscription would be mandatary if you want to keep using my tool. However, I prefer the current donationware model.

    I don't know if someone checks this thread, but I haven't received ANY notifications from Rumpelstiltskin for quite some time, suddenly it just stopped delivering (although clearly keeps scanning and updating feed). All the jobs I picked were found through another RSS tool. I wonder if it's only me or anybody else noticed the same and there's some issue in Rumpelstiltskin itself? (Btw, I use the paid version.)

    Hi Дарья - If you are using the browser version of my tool, I am not aware of any issue with it, though I have been working on automatic synchronization of the preferences between the various servers in the past few weeks, so it's possible I messed something up in your account. Please contact me directly and mention your account name so I can have a closer look at it.

    On June 26, I wrote the current subscriptions add up to less than half of the USD 600 I spend per year on maintaining RumpelstiltskinRSS. "So if my tool helps you earn money, I invite you to make a new one-time donation, or start a subscription."

    After that post, some users did a one-time donation (thanks!), but that still doesn't make a solid enough financial base for the next 12 months.

    So I will change the rules. From now on, you can only use my tool for free during a 3 month trial period, or up to September 30 if you started using it before July this year. After that, I will ask you to pay a fee.

    I haven't made up my mind yet about the height of that fee. For now, if you make any donation or buy the app before September 30 (or already did so), you can keep using my tool up to December 31.

    As of January 1, 2022, I plan to make the tool subscription based. The money you already paid up to then, probably reduced by some amount for usage through December 31, will count as an advance payment for that subscription.

    So for now, please make a donation or buy the app before September 30 if you haven't done so already.

    Hi Alexander, thank you for your reply! I'm glad to say that everything works fine now after I had slightly changed the preferences in translating hours. I don't know, my previous settings were valid as well, but anyway sorry for bothering you! It seems that the trouble was on my side after all.

    Like I wrote on August 15, after a trial period a fee will be mandatory if you want to keep using the web version of my tool. If you don't pay in time, it will show a reminder on the jobs page rather than informing you about any jobs.

    However, I changed my mind about the app versions, because I believe Apple and Google only allow asking a fee for app usage if that fee is paid from within the app, and I am not ready for that. So if you want to use the app version only, nothing changes. You pay for the app itself, of course, but other than that you can keep using it for free (unless and until I implement mandatory fees as in-app purchases at some point in the future).

    For now, the fee I ask is basically USD 20 per year (after a 3 month free trial). Between now and December 31, 2021, some transition rules apply, which I will not explain here in detail. (They are not secret, but they are too boring to elaborate on.) If you use the web version (rather than the app, or along with it), you will see a message on your jobs page that summarizes the upshot for your specific situation. Just contact me if you want to know the details.

    The message only tells you the deadline to pay, not the amount I ask, nor your payment options. I plan to modify and rename the Donate page for this purpose, and insert a link to it in the message. You already can make a "donation", which I will count as a fee for at least the time up to December 31, 2021, but it feels weird to write explicitly in the message "please make a mandatory donation".

    After you paid, I need to do some manual processing before you will see it reflected in the message on your jobs page. I will try to do so within 24 hours after the payment.

    This weekend, I found rmpl.nl had stopped functioning. The problem seemed to be related to the code that communicates with my Payment Service Provider (Mollie), so I disabled that. For now, you can only pay using PayPal. If you cannot or don't want to use PayPal, please contact me directly.

    Since Mollie payments have advantages both for you (more payment methods) and for me (simpler automated administration), I plan to re-enable it in the near future, though it's hard to say exactly how much time I will need.

    Yesterday was the first day a fee for using the web version of my tool was mandatory (unless you started using it less than 3 months ago). If you did not pay in time, the service should be blocked. However, while in my tests everything worked fine, it turned out that the service was also blocked for users who did pay their fee.

    As a temporary solution, I extended the trial period. So whether you paid or not, you can keep using my tool until I fixed the bug, which will most likely be within a few days. If you already paid, I will shift the end date of the period you paid for accordingly. E.g., if you paid USD 5 and I fix the bug tomorrow, your payment counts for the time up to January 3, 2022 rather than December 31, 2021.

    The problem seems to be related to me changing my mind about the rules for app users during the time I wrote the code. Since I am an app user myself, my tests did not reveal this issue that is specific to paying users who did not buy my iOS or Android app.

    BTW The preferred way to pay is on http://rmpl.nl/?pay, where you will be redirected to my payment service provider Mollie. Mollie payments have advantages both for you (more payment methods) and for me (simpler automated administration). You can also use the Pay link on one of the other servers, but there the only option is PayPal.

    I believe I fixed the bug, yet I want to do some extra tests. The first day a fee is mandatory will be next Sunday, October 10. If you already paid, say, USD 5, that counts for the time up to January 9, 2022.
