Hello, I have a question. I am an Indonesian, and right now I am residing in Malaysia for study purpose. As a student who wants to boost income online, do I need to provide the taxpayer declaration? Please help me with this question. Right now I am very doubtful to continue to work here as I will be paid only after I provide the taxpayer declaration as mentioned in the dashboard. Thanks for helping.

Hello and welcome to Gengo! :)

Everyone who wants to translate with us must submit a taxpayer declaration — either a W9 or W8-BEN.

Given the information you've provided above, and assuming you're not a U.S. resident alien, you must complete a W8-BEN and will not have any tax obligation to U.S. authorities. But you must complete our taxpayer declaration.

I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

    Thanks,

    Natalia

Hello! I have a question, before starting translating. I'm Portuguese, so I don't know how U.S taxes work. Can anyone explain that to me, please? I understand the tax obligation, but I would like to know how this works, but I don't even know the taxpayer declaration — a W9 or W8-BEN...

I'm very excited to start working with Gengo but I would be much more relieved when I know exactly what to do to be within the U.S. law.

    Thanks,

    Sofia

    Hi Sofia,

Thanks for writing in. To explain further, as a U.S. company, we must require all translators who are non-US citizens to fill out the W-8BEN form in order to fulfill our obligations with the U.S. government. We use the form solely for record-keeping purposes and do not withhold any taxes when making payments.

The W-8BEN is the only form we require you to fill out and it can be done completely online (most translators tell us it takes about 15 minutes). Instructions for filling out the form are available at the following link (also available on the website): http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw8ben.pdf

You can then request a link to the form at the following URL: http://gengo.com/express/account/file_tax_form/

For further help with the form, we ask that you please visit the IRS' website. For any other questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us - we're here to help.

    Best,

    Sara

    Hello Natalia,

I am a resident of Cyprus and recently got the qualification to work for Gengo. Still I still haven't completed the W-8BEN form, since I am not sure what effect this would have on taxing purposes. Today I got an email to complete a translation project for Gengo, despite the fact that I haven't filled out the form yet. Please advise on what to do.

    Thank you in advance,

Hello, I just got approved for working with Gengo and I have a question about the taxpayer forms. I have both US and Greek citizenship and reside in Greece. Which of the two forms should I fill out?

    Thank you,

    Vanessa

Welcome to Gengo, Martha and Vanessa! :)

@Martha, tax regulations differ from one country to the next so you'll need to consult a local tax professional in Cyprus to find out what your tax obligations are. However, as explained above, you must complete a taxpayer declaration form in order to work for and be paid by Gengo.

@Vanessa, tricky question! I'll need to consult our Finance Team. I'll get back to you with a response asap.

Hello! I recently was accepted for working with Gengo, but I don´t know a lot about the whole tax thing. I understand that by filling out the W8-BEN form, I declare that I´m paying taxes in my country? Is it that or something else?

    Thank you,

    Joana

Hi! I was just recently accepted for working for Gengo, the thing is I don't understand a single thing about taxpaying. About the form, do I have to fill in every field and tick every box, or do I have to complete the required ones?

    Thank You,

    Kevin
