Hi all!

I hope you're all safe and healthy!

Over the last month, you guys may have seen and participated in posts created by Katrina, such as this one on foreign language fluency, and this one on AI tasks. Katrina has recently joined the team as a Community Manager assistant, and is helping me with creating social media content and engaging our community, which is something that I had wanted to do more of for years, but never had the time or resources to do. So far, I'm super happy to see the participation in her posts, which sparked super interesting discussions, and I hope that you guys are enjoying as well. It is my hope that these types of conversations will inspire more of you as well to start your own threads and discussions so that we can continue to grow together as a vibrant community!

Here's Katrina's self introduction :)

Hi, my name is Katrina and I’ve been a translator for Gengo since 2016 and an LS since last year. I’ve recently been working with Lara on some of our social media posts and writing on the forum to start conversations among our translators and AI collaborators. I really enjoy being part of such a diverse and talented community, and it’s been great to engage with all of you in the forum and find out what you have to say about languages, translation and AI.

I originally come from England but over the years I’ve lived, worked and studied abroad in Lisbon, São Paulo, Auckland and Istanbul, before eventually returning to my roots in sunny Manchester. I’ve been passionate about languages for as long as I can remember, and I’m always dreaming of learning more.

Let this be the beginning of many, many great conversations!

Lara

Welcome Katrina. My name is Rodrigo and I’ve been a translator for Gengo since this year (2020). Languages is a very interesting subject. I have a one year old child and it is amazing to see how fast she learns new words. AI is another interesting subject. I work at a military Institute with AI, recognizing patterns "hidden" in Electromagnetics waves. AI is very wide, it is used for everything, from automatic translation to image recognition. I think that Gengo is making a new big step including AI jobs.

Welcome Katrina. First, we need to establish one important issue - MANU or Manchester City? (Or perhaps indifferent?) Jokes aside, I wish you luck in your new position. I am a Norwegian pensioner and have translated for Gengo approx. five years now. Norwegian to english. (Hence the MANU-interest) I enjoy the great variety in the translation jobs, and learn a lot as I go along.

    Hello, everyone!

Thank you so much for your warm welcome and your kind wishes (in so many languages, and from so many parts of the world, too!) I'm really thrilled to have this opportunity to engage with so many fascinating fellow linguists and I was really happy the so many people responded to the posts that Lara and I created already. And yes, as Lara says, please do feel free to contribute your thoughts about anything language- or -AI-related, whether this means leaving comments on existing posts or starting new discussions. It's great to have a place where people can all talk about languages together.

@Rodrigo: welcome to Gengo, and I hope you're enjoying your translation adventures so far! It sounds like you know a lot about both languages and AI already. I agree with you that AI is a huge and in many ways fascinating topic and it's one that I think will impact on our lives a lot in the years to come. As you say, it has a lot of different applications (I think more than many people realise). If you'd like to share any ideas that you have with us about developments in AI, by the way, feel free to do so here or to start another discussion about this! It must be wonderful to watch a child learning their first language. It's amazing how fast they learn. My best wishes to both of you!

@Gunnar: it's Manchester United for me! I always admired them because no matter where you go in the world, when you tell people you're from Manchester, that's the first thing they say to you ("Oh, Manchester... Manchester United!"). They've certainly put our city on the map. I actually worked at Old Trafford stadium while I was at university, selling hot dogs and pies and the like. And despite everything that you hear about English football hooligans, I was always amazed by how peaceful and happy the fans were! And we got a lot of Scandinavian fans, too (and people from many, many other countries).

I always find translation fascinating in the sense that you learn so many things about areas of life that you never really thought about (or even knew about). I always feel like every teaches us tells us something different.

Greetings from our northern home, and take care!

@Alfonso: thank you very much for your welcome and your kind wishes! I'm hoping that my experience as a translator will help me to connect to people, but actually, I'm also very excited to have the opportunity to chat to other translators and share thoughts with everyone (as I keep saying, people's comments on this forum can be fascinating). I always feel that there are so many things that only translators understand, but because by nature our work is normally remote, we don't always have real-life translators to share our experiences with. That's why it's great to have a place where we can all "get together" and chat about such things. Don't hesitate to start your own post on the forum if you have ideas that you'd like to share with people!
