I can see in the instructions page that you're meant to "choose the answer that most accurately translates the question text", but I'm not entirely clear on what type of answer to give in a specific situation. For one of the questions, I had narrowed down to two answers that seemed reasonable given the source text, but they were both clearly quite different. One answer seemed to directly translate the source text very literally, taking the meaning directly, but it didn't really sound like natural English at all. The other answer was much less literal, but seemed to better match the intent of the source text, and was written in the kind of English that you could imagine people actually using. Which answer is more likely to be seen as correct on the test? I could understand seeing the literal translation as more "accurate", but at the same time, it sounds pretty bad, and Gengo even has a guide on "Avoiding literal translation".

Based on my recent results, I'm guessing it could also be neither would be marked as correct, and an even worse answer is actually marked as the correct one. I guess I should probably move on and try to find somewhere else to get translation experience, as the pre-test seems pretty flawed to me. I'm not an expert, by any means, but there are plenty of questions where all 5 answers are pretty bad given the source text, sometimes they'll all even share the same mistranslation. Maybe they think having an answer that's actually good would make it too easy, so it's intentional that you're just supposed to be picking the best option out of 5 bad ones, but I don't see how that can be reliably done, and which mistakes in the answers are considered "worse" is very clearly just a matter of opinion.

I completed a test recently and I had the same experience as you had, the answers were just awful! Even the ones I ended up selecting had so many things I would have corrected. But some of the ones I did not select had some very clear mistakes, so I chose my answer by discarding worse options.
