Could we get an update on this?
I don't quite get why this used to work perfectly in the past, and why it suddenly stopped working.

You mean file preview for file-based jobs? If that's the case, and if I remember correctly, in another thread the community manager said they're planning on phasing out file based jobs altogether, so I guess that fixing the file preview mustn't exactly be one of their top priorities...

@bert.luyten: We did release a fix for this a while ago. Can you confirm it's still not working for you? Please could you provide a screenshot, if possible.

I am confirming with our engineers now and will get back to you once they check it.

@bert.luyten: It was fixed a while ago. However, there are still occasional issues if the file is not encoded in UTF-8. UTF-8 encoding is quite a common standard, so most customer's files will be handled fine.

I have not thought this preview function was fixed because it's not the way it was, and we can only see one part of it. I assumed an interim fix was implemented.

I recently accepted a file-based job (Excel file - 15904105, but right before that a Word docx, 15878054), and I couldn't see any preview. If I open the job(s) page now, all I see is "Original Text", followed by... nothing, and then "Your Translation". Is that normal?

The preview is most definitely not functioning the way that it used to, at least for J>E jobs. Whereas it used to display the entire document with the pages laid out as they appear in the file with selectable pages, it currently only shows roughly half of the first page in unformated plaintext. As ikoeeriha mentions, this was presented as a stopgap solution with an actual fix to follow. Files uploaded by Japanese clients are often encoded in Shift-JIS (seems like no one has spread the word about the benefits of Unicode), so that may be the issue. Considering that Japan is a key market for Gengo, it might be an idea to either request files be encoded in UTF-8 or support Shift JIS encoding.

@mirko: For as long as I can remember, the preview would disappear once you accepted a file-based job. I never thought to ask if that was intended behavior, but it has been the status quo for quite some time, so in that sense I suppose you could call it normal.

@Megan: it is not working for me either. All file jobs (from EN, ES, and RU) have looked exactly like the attached screenshot ever since the workaround was put in place. Hope this helps resolve this issue soon!

'Fixed' is a big overstatement of what it's like now. It's just like Mr. Ian McAuliffe describes.

    Hi all,

Thanks for bringing this topic up, and apologies for the lack of updates.

In order to prioritize already existing bugs and other projects, we have decided to continue to use the current preview feature, which displays the first few sentences of the job at hand.

We understand that, depending on the length of the job, there are specific cases in which this may not be enough to give you an overview of the topic or of possible difficulties. Please note that, in such cases, you may decline the job but we ask that you do so as soon as possible, so that we can allow others to complete the translation as early as possible. We also encourage you to leave an explanatory comment of the reasons for decline, and if the job goes against our policy, please flag the job.

    Thanks,

    Lara
