Kind of offbeat question, but is anyone else using Gengo to keep up on new ideas/activities?
A lot of the work I've done on here is for travel packages, hotels, resorts, etc. in Japan. I don't usually read travel magazines or keep up on tourism stuff, so I like getting all of these free suggestions for onsen or ryokan to stay at that I would have never known about otherwise.
I recently learned about the Kurobe Alpine Route (giant tunnels of snow that last past winter because of being densely packed) and the JR Tadami Line in Oku-Aizu. I did both and they were awesome. Currently saving up for an overnight sleeper train :)
Do you guys also use Gengo as a "filter" like this? You can almost see new trends, movies, games, etc. being talked about across different jobs. Any other fringe benefits you've experienced??

Sure. I mean, I've never thought of it as a travel guide or a filter, but I definitely feel like Gengo gives you a sneak peek into the lives and activities of other people. While I'm doing a job, it's like I'm channeling the author's spirit. For example, I translated an article about McDonald's the other day and afterwards I got an extreme case of the munchies for a Big Mac.
Hi Andrew, thanks for the quick reply. I totally agree.
Do you live in Japan? I've never had a Japanese Big Mac, come to think of it...
Yes, I do.
But I don't think the Big Macs really taste any different here ;)
echo, echo, echo...
Are we alone out here?
Andrew, it seems more people are reading than posting. Hope someone else shares their experiences.
I went to Ginza Six yesterday. Learned about it from a job. It's one of the few places I've seen that unabashedly has a South Indian style restaurant on the food floor, complete with sambar and raita. (Disclaimer: I'm not from Tokyo.) So that was amazing, and super authentic.
Haha, well, people aren't very active on this message board, although someone will usually come through for you if you have a specific question.
Sounds good. Maybe I'll check it out next time I go to Ginza. Today I translated a piece about "ninja ramen". Nothing like jumping on the ninja bandwagon to sell any Japanese product ;)
It's not travel related but I have downloaded some cool apps that I found out about through Gengo jobs.
I work on many travel contents that look very appealing but most of them are overseas and far out of my reach. I'm from Tokyo where many exciting things are happening everyday and I miss them.
Hi HAR,
Thanks for your message. Any cool apps you want to share with us? Productivity related would be of interest...
@TJ
They are more for fun but could help your productivity by giving you time to wind down and refresh:
