Good morning, everyone.
My code is #501209 .
My language pair is English to Chinese (Simplified).
So far, I’ve completed 2943 jobs and translated 30382 units.
My English skill: full marks in Reading and Multiple Choice of TOFEL test and 6.5/7.0 in English writing, known as TWE test.
My Chinese (Simplified) level: I am a journalist, and I write for the national level newspapers in China, such as Beijing Youth Daily and Legal News(《北京青年报》和《法制晚报》). I have published a book in Chinese as well.
3 days ago, my Gengo quality score was 8.9. Yesterday, my score was dramatically changed in which I would like to discuss with everyone in here.
Yesterday, I received a job review email which told me that one of my latest jobs scored 0.07/10.00. I was very confused by the score I received. Fortunately, the senior translator left some comments in the email which made me even more confused.
And today, I received another email that told me “Your English to Chinese (Simplified) qualification is under review” and “UNDER QUALITY ISSUES INVESTIGATION (Reviews are conducted by Gengo Senior Translators, normally within 48 hours).” This one just made me shocked rather than confused.
In fact, it’s more than confusing and shocking for a translator who constantly scored 8.9 and suddenly got “UNDER QUALITY ISSUES INVESTIGATION” followed by a debatable review for one single article.
Why the review is debatable? I’ll explain that with following quotes and examples.
Senior translator comments as “我们拥有一个独特的圈内人优势”译文不够通顺，建议改为：“我们拥有独特的行业优势” which means I should translate the word “insider” into “行业”rather than “圈内人”
The original text is：“We possess a unique insider’s edge that gives our clientele an exceptional market advantage and guarantees utmost satisfaction of every real estate need.”
I believe that my translation of the word “insider”is more suitable and accurate in the article than the comment from senior translator. In another aspect, 圈内人 is also more touchable and convinced in this article than 行业.
Additionally, the most popular Chinese word for “insider” is “圈内人”which is very common and widely used in newspapers, magazines and brochures nowadays in China.
Senior translator comments as “怀着对纽约房地产方方面面的深入了解，他在曼哈顿和布鲁克林广泛地工作，代表着买家和卖家。”译文错误，有机器翻译的嫌疑。 which means I translated the whole sentence wrong and maybe I translated it by some automatic machine.
The original text is: “Deeply knowledgeable about all facets of the NYC real estate marketplace, he has worked extensively in Manhattan and Brooklyn, representing both buyers and sellers.”
I believe that my translated version “怀着对纽约房地产方方面面的深入了解，他在曼哈顿和布鲁克林广泛地工作，代表着买家和卖家。” is decent and suitable.
The senior translator didn’t give me the “right” translation, only told me that “I translated the whole sentence wrong and maybe I translated it by some automatic machine”.
Senior translator comments as.“无论什么任务，客户们始终赞赏Philip的职业道德，清晰沟通的技巧，以及他严格的跟进。 ”译文错误，有机器翻译的嫌疑。
The original text is: “Whatever the task, clients consistently appreciate Philip’s sterling work ethic, his knack for crystal clear communication, and his rigorous follow-up.”
Like the previous example, I believe that my translated version “怀着对纽约房地产方方面面的深入了解，他在曼哈顿和布鲁克林广泛地工作，代表着买家和卖家。” is decent and suitable.
Again, like the previous example,The senior translator didn’t give me the “right” translation, only told me that “I translated the whole sentence wrong and maybe I translated it by some automatic machine”.
There are some other similar quotes and examples. It’s not necessary to list them all.
Nevertheless, I honestly admit that I made mistakes in the article. But I also honestly don’t think that the mistakes can lead to a 0.07/10 and put me into the UNDER QUALITY ISSUES INVESTIGATION statues followed by my constant score of 8.9.
To sum up, despite my little different views, I always respect the works of senior translators in Gengo. I also truly hope that Gengo will give me and every translator here a justified review and judicial quality investigation.
Thanks you all.
